The Industrial Heritage of Rijeka
Rijeka is a city with an industrial past, from the 18th century city grows with industry, industrial buildings, warehouses. Manufactures and industrial production of paper started near river Rječina in eastern part of the city, the first port of Rijeka. In the west part, the first production was planned near sea cost. Oil refinery, sugar refinery, rope factory, paper factory, tanneries, torpedo factory, shipyards, foundries and other kinds of productions were built in former peripheral industrial zones. The development of the production was followed by building roads, railways, and new modern port. In the 20th Century, in the socialist period after the Second World War industrial production carries the rebuilding of the city and its development. Today, the abandoned architectural heritage which are today a part of the city center, during an almost 300 year-long industrial history witnesses the city development that was stopped in the 1990s after a period of privatization.
Research on the industrial heritage of Rijeka, both tangible and intangible, has been ongoing for 15 years emphasizing the importance of all aspects of heritage, architecture, history, naval heritage and the intangible heritage that is most difficult to preserve.
The lecture will cover industrial history themes of the city and connection of development of the city with the development of the Koper and Trieste.
